Extend Green Card cover while you wait for the Zulassung in Germany
Waiting for an appointment at the Zulassungsstelle, the HU or a CoC? We extend your export insurance by 14 days at a time, after approval by the insurer, from €120. Apply via WhatsApp, email or the form.
The German steps do not always fit into 14 days. An appointment at the Zulassungsstelle (German vehicle registration office) may be weeks away, the HU may still have to be scheduled, or the CoC (certificate of conformity) or Datenbestätigung may still be on its way. In that case you can extend the export insurance, so that the car stays insured while you wait.
With an extension you receive a new Green Card, also as a PDF by email.
Why an export insurance extension is often needed for Germany
Typical reasons for an extension are:
waiting for an appointment at the Zulassungsstelle;
waiting for the HU (roadworthiness test) or an inspection date;
a CoC or Datenbestätigung that has not arrived yet;
the eVB (insurance confirmation) from the German insurer that is not ready yet;
delayed transport, or a buyer who is not ready.
Each extension adds 14 days and needs the approval of the insurer. Repeated extensions are possible, each time for 14 days and each time after approval.
How to extend Green Card cover online
Send your request via WhatsApp, email or the form on this page.
We check it and ask the insurer for approval.
We confirm the approval and the price.
You pay by bank transfer.
After payment you usually receive the new insurance certificate with Green Card within 15 minutes by email, including a PDF.
If the insurer does not approve, you pay nothing, because payment only follows our confirmation. We cannot say in advance how long the insurer's check takes. You can also extend at our desk in Hengelo. Cover that was taken out elsewhere can be extended too, with a follow-on policy, after approval by the insurer. The price starts from €120 per 14 days and is confirmed in advance; it can be higher for heavy or unusual vehicles. Extending more than once is possible: if the CoC arrives late or the appointment moves, you request another 14 days in the same way, again subject to the approval of the insurer. For several vehicles or a long-term business relationship a discount is sometimes possible, always agreed in advance.
What we need for the extension of your export insurance
the registration number;
the current Green Card or policy (photo or PDF);
the end date of the current cover;
the country where the vehicle is now, and its destination;
the details of the policyholder and the driver.
The form has no upload field, so use the 'Send photos and documents by WhatsApp' button with the form below, or send them by email. Questions first? Contact our export desk.
Limits: export plates, the APK and driving after 14 days
The extension covers the insurance only. On Dutch public roads the car may be driven for 14 days after deregistration, and never longer than its APK (the Dutch roadworthiness test) is valid (RDW). That does not change, so the export plates themselves are not extended: see Dutch export plates.
Abroad, the rules of the country where the vehicle is located apply, and the rules for Dutch export plates vary by country. An extension gives no right to drive in Germany after the first 14 days, so ask the Zulassungsstelle in advance what is allowed. If the vehicle is still in the Netherlands and the 14 days are over, it can only be moved on a trailer or car transporter.
Apply in good time, so that the new cover follows on directly from the current one; without valid insurance the vehicle may not be driven. If the cover has already expired, an extension is still possible after the insurer approves, but the car is uninsured in the gap and may not be driven then. Our advice remains to book the HU and the Zulassung within the first 14 days: see registering a car in Germany and our export insurance for the drive.
Export insurance extension
from €120 per 14 days
14 extra days of third-party liability cover
New Green Card by email (PDF), usually within 15 minutes of payment
Request online, or at our desk
Also if your current export insurance was arranged elsewhere
Starting price per 14-day extension, including VAT where applicable. The price can be higher per vehicle, for example for heavy or non-standard vehicles.
Every extension needs the insurer's approval, and you only pay once we have confirmed that approval and the price. You can extend more than once, each time by 14 days.
Request the extension in good time so the new cover follows on from the current one. If your cover has already expired, an extension is still possible, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK (Dutch roadworthiness test) or technical inspection, again subject to the insurer's approval. Until the new cover starts, the vehicle must not be driven.
The extension covers the insurance only, not the export registration. On Dutch public roads you may drive for 14 days after deregistration, and never beyond the APK expiry date (RDW). The extension does not change that.
Abroad, the rules of the country where the vehicle is located apply. The policy and Green Card state which countries and drivers are covered.

Questions on extending export insurance during the Zulassung in Germany
How much does it cost to extend export insurance?
From €120 per extension of 14 days, including VAT where applicable. The price can be higher for heavy or unusual vehicles and is always confirmed before you pay.
Does the extension also extend the export plates?
No. The export plates are valid for 14 days on Dutch roads and never longer than the APK, and that does not change. The extension covers the insurance only.
Can you extend cover that I took out elsewhere?
Yes. We can extend it by 14 days with a follow-on policy, after approval by the insurer.
What if my export insurance has already expired?
An extension is still possible after the insurer approves, for example if the vehicle has a valid APK. Between the old and the new cover the vehicle is not insured and may not be driven, so apply in good time.
Can I keep driving in Germany after the first 14 days?
We cannot promise that. The rules for Dutch export plates vary by country, and an extension of the insurance does not change that. Ask the Zulassungsstelle in advance what is allowed, or have the car transported.
Starting prices, including VAT where applicable. Outside office hours, depending on the vehicle or for postal delivery the price can be higher; we always confirm it in advance. See all prices
