Temporary export insurance for driving a Dutch car to Germany
Our temporary export insurance gives 14 days of third-party cover on white Dutch export plates, with a Green Card as proof. It is not the German insurance with an eVB, which the buyer takes out in Germany.
- 14 days of cover with a Green Card
- Green Card also as PDF by email
- Extension from €120 per 14 days
from €100
Between the Dutch export and the German registration, the car needs insurance for the road. That is what our temporary export insurance is for. We are not an insurance company: we arrange the policy through our insurance partner, and the policy and the Green Card set out where and for whom the cover applies.
Third-party cover and Green Card for the export drive
The export insurance is a temporary third-party (WA) policy for 14 days, covering damage you cause to others. It comes with a Green Card, the international proof of insurance (Council of Bureaux). You receive the confirmation by email, including the Green Card as a PDF; at our desk in Hengelo you also take the Green Card and the white plates with you.
The policy and the Green Card determine in which countries and for which driver you are covered, so read them before you set off. We do not publish a list of countries of our own.
Why Germany asks for a Green Card on foreign vehicles
Under German law a foreign vehicle may only be used on public roads there if the damage it causes is covered (AuslPflVG). For a vehicle insured in the country of its usual base, a Green Card serves as proof. That country is, among other things, the state whose registration plate the vehicle carries, whether the plate is permanent or temporary (§ 1a PflVG). Our export insurance with a Green Card fits in with this. On the way there are no transit countries, as the Netherlands borders Germany.
Export insurance versus German car insurance with an eVB
For the Zulassung itself you need an eVB (elektronische Versicherungsbestätigung), the electronic confirmation of a German Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung, the compulsory motor insurance. The buyer takes out that insurance with a German insurer of their choice and receives the eVB number from that insurer. We do not issue an eVB, and we do not arrange that German insurance.
In short: our export insurance covers the drive on Dutch export plates, while the German insurance with an eVB is needed for the registration and the German plates. The steps are in our guide on how to register a car in Germany.
When your Dutch car insurance stops and the export cover starts
Your Dutch car insurance is no longer valid once the car has been removed from the Dutch register (NederlandWereldwijd). After the export, the Dutch insurance obligation ends for the former owner, but the car still needs cover to be driven. Our export insurance fills that gap from the start date you choose.
If the car goes on a trailer or car transporter, it usually needs no insurance for driving; the export document is still required. A caravan or trailer also gets export insurance from us: up to 750 kg on the chassis number, heavier ones on their own registration. See importing a motorhome, caravan or trailer.
Start date, route and driver: what the export insurance needs
To arrange the export insurance we need the desired start date, the destination and route, and the details of the policyholder and the driver. For a business buyer we also need the company name, address and VAT number. Insurance and white plates together start from €100; the complete package with the export document starts from €150. You can send the details in advance by WhatsApp or email, or contact our desk.
Extending the insurance while the Zulassung is pending
If the appointment, the HU (roadworthiness test) or the CoC takes longer than planned, we can extend the cover by 14 days at a time, from €120 and after approval by the insurer. Read more on extending export insurance. The extension does not extend the export plates themselves: they remain valid for 14 days on Dutch roads and never longer than the APK (the Dutch roadworthiness test). The rules for Dutch export plates vary by country, so check with the Zulassungsstelle (vehicle registration office) before you drive on after the first 14 days.

Export insurance or eVB? Questions on insuring a car for Germany
Are you the insurer?
No. We are an RDW-recognised export desk, not an insurance company. We arrange the temporary export insurance through our insurance partner, and the policy and Green Card set out the countries and drivers covered.
Does the Zulassungsstelle accept your export insurance instead of an eVB?
No. The Zulassungsstelle needs an eVB from a German Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung, which the buyer takes out with a German insurer. Our export insurance covers the drive on Dutch export plates; we do not issue an eVB.
Do I get the Green Card on paper or by email?
Both. We confirm the export insurance by email with the Green Card as a PDF, and at our desk you also receive the Green Card together with the white plates.
Is export insurance needed if the car is carried on a transporter lorry?
Usually not for the transported car itself, as it is not driven. The export document is still needed, because the Zulassungsstelle wants the Dutch export papers.
Does a caravan need its own export insurance?
Yes. A caravan or trailer also gets export insurance: up to 750 kg on the chassis number with a white plate showing the towing vehicle's number, and heavier ones with one white plate carrying their own registration.
